Everything You Need to Know About Phone Grips

• Louis Fabec

A phone grip is a small base that sticks to the back of your phone or case and folds flat when you are not using it. Open it and you get a place for a finger to hold on. Phones keep getting bigger and slicker, and a grip turns a flat slab into something your hand can actually hold.

The main types of phone grips

  • Adhesive collapsible: sticks to the phone or case, flattens when closed, opens into a grip and a stand.
  • Ring holders: a metal loop you slide a finger through. Sturdy, but it stays raised and can poke in a pocket.
  • Straps and bands: elastic or silicone loops. Slim and cheap, with less stand ability.
  • Magnetic grips: a grip with built-in magnets that snaps onto metal surfaces or a mounting disc.
  • Grip cases: the grip is part of the case. Convenient, but you swap the whole case to change anything.

How to choose one

  • Easier one-handed use: a grip that opens wide enough for any finger size.
  • Hands-free video and calls: a grip that doubles as a stand.
  • A phone that mounts in the car, gym or kitchen: built-in magnets plus a disc for non-metal surfaces.
  • A pocket-friendly profile: a grip that collapses completely flat.

Get the stickiness right

A grip is only as good as its adhesive. Adhesive grips work with most cases, including textured ones. They do not hold well on silicone cases or loose-fitting, rubbery cases, so stick yours to the phone itself or to a firm case. Clean the surface first, press the base down for a full 30 seconds, and give it a day before putting weight on it.

Stick the grip to your phone once, then mount it on the Anywhere Disc

Why magnets change the game

A grip that stays on your phone is useful. A grip that also snaps onto things is a different tool. Built-in magnets let the phone hold to a fridge, a toolbox, a gym rack or a steel dashboard mount with no extra parts. For surfaces that are not magnetic, such as glass, wood or plastic, a thin adhesive metal disc gives the magnets something to grab.

A grip with magnets is not the same thing as a MagSafe accessory. Check what a product actually says before you buy, so you get the one that fits how you use your phone.

Where an Anywhere grip lives

Car dashboards, desks, refrigerators, toolboxes and gym equipment all work as mounting spots. Put the disc on one non-metal surface you use every day, and your phone has a home there. Slide the grip off the surface when you are done and it goes back to being a grip.
